Disco is a fascinating project: a fast, smart, ultra-light drone with around 45 minutes of flight time. This will be the first “ready-to-fly” wing-shaped drone, and the first everyone can easily pilot.

Just mount the wings to the body and throw it in the air. It’s truly a drone: it connects to the Parrot ecosystem through Wi-Fi and you pilot it with the Skycontroller or the Flight Plan app using the embedded GPS for waypoints.

Disco inherits the 3-axis digital stabilization of the Bebop drone camera. Additionally, a new “Autopilot” mode mimics the flight thrills of a seasoned pilot. We are designing a totally innovative piloting system based on assisted control: the computer controls the drone and the pilot can play with the pitch without the risk of a bad maneuver or a stall.

We conceived this wing with the help of senseFly engineers, the leaders in commercial fixed wing drones. As an example, the autopilot code was tested in their HQ in Lausanne, Switzerland, and benefits from years of flight experience.

  1. Wonderful! Very exciting prospect!! Worried about protecting camera lense. Is it any less exposed than BEBOP’s? Should be major design consideration. Without high lense quality drone becomes useless for anything other than a toy.

    1. Given Parrots’s history I’m imagining not. I was excited reading this, then saw it mentioned wifi again and was immediately disappointed. I’ve been flying the bebop over wifi is not a great drone experience.

    1. Currently, the most popular PROFESSIONAL drone is the Phantom…
      For many use cases (in agriculture, notably), an affordable (and shh, don’t say fun^^) fixed-wing drone with bolt-on SaaS data processing would be the most sensible value proposition. I think Parrot could be on to a winner here, at what is probably limited development cost (given the blended bebop+ebee DNA).

    1. Yes you can change the camera angle thanks to a 180 degree fish eye lens, which means there is no mechanical movement that may destabilize the drone. It’s kind of hard to actually explain how to change the angle via text, but once you get the app it’s really easy to figure out.

  2. Very nice project this Disco release. I’m very familiar with flying all kinds of RC planes: fixed wings, canard, jets, pushers, drones, FPV. It will be great to test this beautifull Parrot Disco. Consider me available to made a full review of it. :)

      1. Whats about:
        – a plastic cover in front of the lense (like RV Jet)
        – place the camera sligthly up an backward to be coverd by the nose (like Skywalker X8 or http://www.uavworks.nl/data/upload/Shop/images/fx-79-1.jpg)
        – add a classic camera lense cover

        – changing the landing profile; short before impact pitch heavy up so that the plane will stall an crash first with the tail to the ground

        Just some novice ideas.

  3. Ok, now that the pics are out we expect a chinese clone on sale in a couple of months…Eachine or such….you’d better hurry….

    1. There exist already the TBS Caipirinha from China for 1’200.- USD. But the Parrot Disco provide more features and looks better.

      1. Pattot Disco certainly is superb but claiming this to be the first of its kind is just not fair. There already exist others with comparable features and flight times.

      1. That would count for ‘distance’ not altitude. My Bebop2 drone is limited to 150 meters altitude, that is why I was asking. I use a Skycontroller that supports that kind of distances. But thanks anyways.

          1. Thing is: the air is thinner in the mountains – can the drone be operated at altitudes of 4 or 5km for example?

  4. The Winglet detail design looks nice. It seems you invested time into the details.

    What is the maximum range of the Disco? 30 km?
    Who did you solve the breaking of rotor blades by landing?
    Which kind of battery is to use? (So fare you are free to communicate it yet)
    Which kind of aerodynamic profile is used? (So fare you are free to communicate)
    And is it possibile to install the whole electric also in a self build flying wing other self build airplane?

    P.S. In which amazing area did you test the Disco?

  5. Looks great. I have friends who are ranchers in South Dakota. This could be a life saver for them. How much will the Disco cost?

  6. Very interesting product. You took the eBee drone, moved the camera to the nose with a slightly lower quality camera. Added manual piloting abilities that the ebee doesn’t have, and probably going to charge about $25,000 – $30,000 less for the Disco than you do the eBee. Makes me wonder why such the eBee has such an overinflated cost!?!?

  7. how about putting some weaponry augmentation into the tablet view so you can dogfight with others or CGI enemies?

    1. That’s the problem with something like this. Its impractical if its primary goal is to use it for videos. Not very useful.

  8. Cool looking but flawed and impractical.
    1. There is no landing gear. I looks like it crash lands so you better have a soft landing area.
    2. Since its not a quad copter, there is no way to have it stationary in the air and rotating 360 degrees for panoramic video’s and pics. That’s a big negative.
    3. It goes only one way which is straight ahead.
    4. It needs to be moving, thus what is the slowest speed it can function at without crashing?
    5. Cannot use it indoors or in tight places. It has to be WIDE OPEN or it will crash.
    I see trouble written all over this one. It will crash and break. Count on it.

    1. Thanks for the insightful analysis. So the fixed-wing drone, which is also called an AIRPLANE, is fatally flawed since it (a) cannot fly backwards, (b) cannot hover, and (c) cannot be safely operated inside your house. You’ve saved countless drone enthusiasts who can’t tell the difference between an airplane and a helicopter from wasting their money, and perhaps from flying their fixed-wing drone into mom’s china cabinet.

      1. What is it about the word “impractical” that you don’t get? What are you going to do with it when it crash lands and you’re left with little worthless pieces. But go ahead and put your money where your mouth is little man and let us know the quality of Parrot customer service and its replacement policy.

Now I can clearly see your keen insight – it is, indeed, impractical to use a toy airplane to try to do toy helicoptery things. And I’m sure you’re right that Parrot, having worked on the development of this new drone for over two years, is tired now, and probably will leave it to us hapless customers to figure out how to land this thing without smashing it to pieces. Shameful . . .

          1. Watch the video. Now watch how it lands. Notice the camera is in the nose of the product. Now use common sense.

    2. Now look at the positives. It has a much longer flight time. If a motor fails or the battery gets low it will glide down and not turn into a brick.. Its a lot faster than a multicopter. Flying wings don’t don’t need undercarriage to land and the prop should also be fine. Some experience helps here. Indeed this is designed for flying out doors thats obvious but so is most types of FPV flying. Cameras are usually rugged these days and they will have deigned it to take some crash damage but that’s going to be the same for a multicopter. If you lose control the stabilisation will keep it level and I’m sure will have programmed in a fail safe procedure. You can make 360 degree panaromic shots it can fly in circles and software these days will stitch the pictures together. With a down facing camera it could also do aerial mapping I’m sure Parrot will look into that. Flying wings are generally more rugged than multicopters if designed right, and more fun but that’s my opinion.

      1. Great points. I think *experience* is the key. If one has experience flying this type of drone I’m sure it’s a more confident feeling. Your point on gliding it is cool as hell. Not sure if you can power it off in mid air but it sure would be fun. Thanks for the helpful comment!

    1. That is REALLY cool! Notice how it has landing gear vs the Parrot. Not sure what Parrot was thinking when they designed this product. The Krossblade has props for ease of take off and landing and appears to be able to hover. Hey Spencer, are you listening?

  9. I hope the wifi range is at least 30 miles. The wifi range needs to match with how far the drone can go and return before the battery dies in 45 minutes.

  10. I am an experienced pilot of rc planes and what I see is everything an fpv pilot would want in 1 package. What is the range? I also love the transmitter with lcd screen which I believe is an option buy but I’d hate to see the price. I believe it will be very expensive. Anyway, I’d like to cogratulate you on something that will be much more fun than the monotonous quad copter. Well done!!

  12. The most important question is which No one seem to be asking when and if it will be release this year its been 8 month and not a peep from Parrot. I hat to say it but seems like Parrot bit off more than they can chew and this is why they will never ever be relevant. I can build one of these with same capabilies and people have just check YouTube. Dji announces there Phantom 4 and weeks later it’s available to the public. I’m quessing it will be over price and does not live to Parrot’s Hype, Too bad but not surprising because it’s Parrot

      Mind you, it’s a very effective technique if you want everyone to ignore what you are trying (in your limited way) to say.

  13. Compared with DJI Phantom 3P or 4 – can’t see any advantage. Range is limited by the radio signal (about 5-6Km for Phantom, much less for Disco), so flying at a bit higher speed is meaningless. Camera is inferior, landing into your hand is impossible (so you can’t land in any limited space place like balcony, narrow path on mountain, etc.). You can’t fly it slowly and low (selfies, inspection of inaccessible places) and you can’t fly it into narrow passages between buildings (you can’t reverse and any return requires to fly it in a circle). Just flying longer time doesn’t seem useful when the range is low, so why would you pay more than for a Phantom?

  14. don’t know. the website didn’t say. but i think if you go too high you can’t see it and the camera lens are going to break when you crash
